The Court of Appeal today (04) acquitted former Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra of contempt of court charges, concluding the hearing of a petition filed against her. The petition alleged that Premachandra had committed contempt of court following remarks made at a press conference regarding an order issued by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
The court issued its decision after Premachandra, through her legal counsel, expressed her willingness to withdraw the contentious statement and assured the court that she would refrain from making similar comments in the future.
The case was heard before a panel of the Court of Appeal comprising Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, Presiding Judge of the Appeal Division, and Justice Shashi Mahendran.
