China ready to establish crude oil refinery here

Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong told the Chief Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters that a refinery with state-of-the-art technology capable of refining four tonnes of crude oil per day will be established in Sri Lanka as a Chinese investment.

The Chinese Ambassador held discussion with Mahanayake of Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera, and the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter, Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera.

He said that the existing crude oil refinery in Sri Lanka has been built in the sixties and after the opening of the new oil refinery proposed to be built as a Chinese investment, there will be many big changes in the fuel distribution sector in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador also stated that China has planned to start the operation of 150 fuel filling stations in Sri Lanka. The Ambassador also said that China has planned to invest US$ 120-140 million in Sri Lanka this year and that many new job opportunities will be created for Sri Lankans. He also emphasized that they can work together with the emerging industries through those projects. He said that by now China has surpassed the American economy.
